Don’t Ignore the Sound that it Makes

If you often hear scraping, creaking and grating sounds when opening and closing your garage door, then chances are something is wrong with it. Always check on the cables, springs and pulleys to make sure that everything is symmetrical and that nothing is going loose.

Loose and asymmetrical equipment can be dangerous to you and your family, as the garage door can act up at any moment. If you do find any loose bolts, then go ahead and call your mechanic ASAP.

Keep the Moving Parts Lubricated

The rollers and door openers are the ones that often moves, which is why it is essential always to keep them lubricated. You do not have to do it regularly – just twice a year would be enough to keep it working in proper condition.

You can do it yourself, too – simply take a high-quality spray lubricant and spray it on the rollers and hinges. Clean the excess of once you are done. You should also make sure to lubricate the pulleys on the extension-spring openers, as well as the torsion-spring openers.

Simply wipe a bit of oil on the torsion spring if it appears to be rusty.

Pay Attention to the Door

The door’s appearance is as important as keeping the parts properly moving. Check the door and see if there are any rust spots that need to be painted, sanded or primed. If you have a fiberglass door, then it can simply be washed with an all-purpose cleaner.

However, if you have a wooden garage door, then you most definitely have to pay more attention to it, as this is more prone to warping and water damage. If you see any chipping or rusts, remove it, sand it, then repaint it.

See the Tracks

Take a look at the tracks on both sides of the garage door to see if there are no present rust and debris. If they are not, then go ahead and take a level to make sure that these tracks are perfectly aligned with the vertical sections.

If you are quite handy, then you can go ahead and try your hand at it. However, if you are unsure of what to do, then it would be best to call a professional to avoid any type of accident or further damage.

It is a must to have a professional take a look at your garage door every now and then to make sure that everything is working perfectly. Twice a year would be enough – just make sure that you are calling the right people in and that they completely know how to take a look at a garage door and repair it if need be.
